Monday Motivation: What You Feed Grows - A Simple Mindset Shift

If you’re always looking for problems, you’ll find them everywhere. When that happens, it’s easy for life to feel like one big problem to solve (I know, that’s a bit dramatic—but you get the point!).

Instead, try shifting to an appreciative lens—a mindset that focuses on what’s working and what’s possible.

I first learned about this idea in undergrad during my commerce and international development studies, where it’s called asset mapping.

Later, in 2013, during one of the intensives in my Pepperdine Master’s of OD program, I started using this concept as a simple experiment—and I’ve been doing it ever since.

It’s literally a 10-second, two-part practice that can shift your whole day.

Part 1: Morning Spark

Before grabbing your phone or rolling out of bed, take a moment to think about three things you’re excited about for the day:

  • It could be as small as drinking a refreshing glass of water or as big as crossing a project off your to-do list.
  • Maybe it’s visualizing something you’re scared of going really, really well.
  • Or just enjoying your favorite lunch or spending time with someone you care about.

For me, on this Monday morning, I’m excited about:

✅ Having two uninteresting hours at my desk—after weeks of sick kids who just want Mom, this feels like a luxury.

✅ Going to the gym—moving my body is medicine.

✅ Getting to the beach with said kids—nature and fresh air are also medicine, and it’s not raining today! Wooo hooooo.

Part 2: Evening Pride

Before closing your eyes at night, reflect on three things you’re proud of from the day:

  • These don’t have to match your morning thoughts—and they can be big or small.
  • Maybe it’s speaking up in a meeting when you would have stayed quiet.
  • Maybe it’s sending that email you’ve been putting off or just making it through a tough day.

Why This Mindset Shift Works

Starting your day with excitement and ending it with pride shifts your focus from problems to possibilities. It’s a small spark that can grow into energy, momentum, and joy.

This is a strengths-based approach to your life: instead of focusing on what needs to change, focus on what lights you up—and do more of that.

Try it this week.

So much becomes possible when you nurture that spark inside.

➡Share this with a friend who might need a little boost to their week, and drop a comment below—what are you excited about today?

(PS: I drafted this at 5:30 am and have since been to the gym. It was MAGIC.)
